Batista was a Cuban military officer and politician who served as the elected President of Cuba  who twice ruled  Cuba —first in 1933–44 with an efficient government and again in 1952–59 as a dictator, jailing his opponents, using terrorist  methods, and making fortunes for himself and his associates. In 1956, Fidel Castro  launched a revolution from his camp in the Sierra Maestra mountains in 1956, Castro’s brother Raul and Ernesto (Ché) Guevara, were his top lieutenants. Many landowners and rich supported the rebels. The U.S. ended military aid to Cuba in 1958, and on New Year’s Day 1959, Batista fled into exile and Castro took over the government.

Fidel Castro  a charismatic, anti-U.S. revolutionary, seized power on January 1, 1959, following his successful revolt against the U.S.-backed Batista government. As the Castro regime deprived  U.S. properties and investments and began, officially, on April 16, 1961, to convert Cuba into a one-party communist system, relations between the United States and Cuba deteriorated rapidly. The United States imposed an embargo on Cuba on October 19,1960, and broke diplomatic relations on January 3, 1961, in response to Castro’s expropriations without compensation and other provocations, such as arrests of U.S. citizens. The failure of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)–sponsored invasion by Cuban exiles in April 1961 allowed the Castro regime to destroy the entire Cuban underground and to emerge strengthened and consolidated, basking in the huge propaganda value of having defeated the Americans.

The Revolution Square is a historic symbol of Cuba. From this place important speeches have been proclaimed and patriotic acts have been carried out by Fidel Castro. This huge square was built on a hill, it is considered as one of the largest public squares in the world. It became known as Revolution Square when the armed struggle of the Cuban people triumphed in 1959. A pyramidal tower has at its base a statue of white marble of 18 meters of height that represents the national hero and poet Jose Marti seated and thoughtful. The tower is the highest point of the city of Havana and is a view point with breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
